History
Since its' inception in 1983, Novalis Ubuntu has developed and delivered a wide range of innovative educational and social programs in KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape. Major Achievements include the following:
| 1985 |
The Novalis Institute, in partnership with the Durban City Council brought the international PHANOMENA Science Exhibition from Zurich and Rotterdam to Durban for a six-month run, enabling more than 250,000 people to experience it. |
| 1986 |
The Institute was commissioned to assist in the redesign and development of the Ubuntu Center in Guguletu, utilising the process of "community" or "social" architencture. The Ubuntu Center was the first such joint venture whith another organization which included the community in the design, development and management of the project. |
| 1987 |
The Foundation founded The Novalis College for Adult Education, which opened in January 1988. The College offered adult education courses based upon the Emmerson College model in England, in the spheres of sciences, philosophy, arts and crafts, plus educational programs for practicing teachers. In 1992 The Novalis College became a separate legal entity, no called the Center for Creative Education. |
| 1991 |
The Novalis Teacher Enrichment Program for educators from disadvantaged communites was developed, named "Putting the Heart back into Teaching". Since inception, over 30,000 educators have completed the course at Novalis Ubuntu. |
| 1992 |
The Novalis Ubuntu Arts Project was developed to meet two interlocking sets of needs. One was to assist teachers in the former disadvantaged schools wishing to implement the arts curriculum, but who lacked the skills and training to do so. The other was to provide after-school art classes for township children, who could also improve their English skills as part of the lessons. Over 100 educators and pupils participated in this training. |

Phase one of the Novalis Ubuntu Resource Center was completed. |
| 1997/1998 |
By then, the Novalis Program included whole Schools Development that aims to assist in management changes in schools addressing the need and capacity for staff development, and seeks to provide a supportive network for reconciliatory relationships within and between schools in different communities. It also facilitates creative dialogs on common issues and common concerns in education. Class Room Skills Development for educators from previously disadvantaged communities offering programs at pre-primary, junior and senior primary school level. More than 30,000 educators had participated in Novalis Ubuntu Programs wiht teh benefis reaching more than half-a-million children in the Western and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng in South Africa and also in Tanzania, Kenya and the Dominican Republic. |
| 1999 |
The Resurgence trainer of trainers program was launched in the Overberg region to develop "whole school development practitioners". Fifty school Principals completed this program. Also, the Whole Food Garden Project was initiated at a pilot school in the Overberg region to further cross-curricula experiential learning, introduce agriculture as a potential vocation for the future and provide healthy food to supplement the school-feeding scheme. Forty schools in the region benefited from this project. In addition, and at the request from teachers from the Dominican Republic, a program was conducted over a four-week period based based upon Novali's Teacher Manual "Putting the Heart Back into Teaching". Also, Music & Integrated Arts Accross the Curriculum (MAIC) was designed to assist teachers with arts-based education skills in the classroom in alignment with Outcomes Based Education (OBE) practice. A pilot program was conducted at Novalis at the end of 1999 and then offered to schoolteachers through 2000 and 2001. |
| 2000 |
South African Beautiful Schools Campaign was brought to South Africa as a potential incentive for development under the Whole School Development program and was implemented in some schools in the Western Cape in 2001, to continue through 2006. Also, the Whole Food Garden's Project is launched in the Overberg Region following aa successful pilot project in 1999 with a six schools and with 24 schools participating in 2001. |
| 2001 |
The development of Civil Society empowerment, learning and solidarity, through workshops, courses, presentations and the promotion of the sectoral partnerships. The Novalis Civil Society Initiative was created for awareness raising, empowerment and building solidarity within Civil Society Organizations within South Africa. South Africa Civil Society Agenda 21 (SACSSA 21). Discussion Document has been created for this purpose. Accreditation of Novalis Ubuntu Programs through SAQA is currently being assessed. In addition, Novalis Ubuntu is initiating and developing a Standard Generating Body (SGB) for Arts based learning and has successfully solicited support throughout South Africa. The three initial Unit Standards were crafted based upon the educational experience of the members of the SGB. Registration was conferred by SAQA in 2006. |
| 2002 |
Curriculum Assessment and Professional Training (C.A.P.T.) for teachers and education officials will be piloted in the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. This program is fundamental to the full implementation of Curriculum 2005 as it assists teachers develop the capacity to become professional assessors, transforming the testing mindset. |
| 2003 |
Beautiful Schools Campaigns in Limpopo and North West Provinces is launched. |
| 2004 |
Novalis Ubuntu expands it's Kwa-Zulu Natal in service training program for schools and develops and economic empowerment project called: Sekulele, which enables schools and their communities to engage in craft making and entrepreneurship. |
| 2005 |
African Drum and Dance is continued in the Manenberg schools with teh continued suport of the UNA of Harnosand, Sweden. Our Whole Food Gardens project is increased to service schools in Mitchell's Plein and Grassy park as well as continuing the successful work in Overberg. |
| 2006/2007 |
Consolidating of our 4 Programs: Education (with 6 projects), Youth (with 2 projects), Civil Society (2 projects) and Orphan Care (6 projects). Beautiful Schools Campaign is re-launched at Artscape in October. 1,000 schools participated in 2004 in Limpopo Province and 50 pilot schools in the North West Province while 60 schools participated in the Western Cape. Together with the continuation of existing projects, Novalis Ubuntu incorporated a successful youth empowerment program called "Certificate of Youth Trainers". This became effective in April 2006. Also, SAQA confers registration of the three Unit Standards developed by the Standard Generating Body (SGB) for Arts and Culture-based Education. In addition, Whole Food Gardens expands to include the previous "Putting the Heart Back into Teaching" program specially for the winter months when the weather is not conductive for outdoor activities. Finally, Novalis Ubuntu launches the "Inmate Empowerment Initiative" in correctional service facilities in the Cape Town area. This program seeks to engage previous 'inmates' in self-awareness and creativity programs to prepare them for re-integration into society at large. |
